A puddle of water forming under the fridge, or water pooling inside it, is one of the most common symptoms our technicians come across. It’s not necessarily a cooling problem on its own: our article Fridge Stopped Cooling notes that about 30% of cases where a fridge seems to cool poorly are actually linked to water, a sign that the defrost system or drain isn’t working properly. Here’s what we find most often when leaking is the main symptom, and what you can check before calling.
Basic checks you can do yourself
- Find the drain hole: it’s usually at the bottom of the fridge compartment, often hidden under a small grille. A flexible pipe cleaner or a bit of warm water poured directly into the hole can sometimes clear a minor blockage.
- If your fridge has a water or ice dispenser: check the water filter housing and its fittings; a filter that isn’t properly seated or is past its useful life can leak right at that spot.
- Check the levelling: a fridge tilted slightly backward (front a bit higher than the back) helps defrost water flow toward the drip pan at the back, and also lets the doors swing shut on their own.
- Inspect the door seal: a worn seal lets warm air in, which speeds up frost buildup on the evaporator; the excess frost then melts in larger amounts and can exceed the drip pan’s capacity.
The most common causes
Here are the five causes behind the vast majority of the 368 cases analyzed for this symptom, along with their one-visit resolution rate.
- Blocked drain tube: 54.3% of cases resolved in one visit 89.5% of the time. Repair: clearing the drain tube, usually blocked by food residue or ice.
- Water filter: 15.5% of cases resolved in one visit 71.9% of the time. Repair: replacing the water filter, often the direct source of a leak at the housing.
- Defrost system (including the fan and heating element): 8.2% of cases resolved in one visit 60.0% of the time. Repair: replacing the fan or the defrost heating element. A failure in this system prevents the evaporator from defrosting properly; the frost that builds up eventually melts in large amounts and overflows the drip pan.
- Control board: 5.4% of cases resolved in one visit 50.0% of the time, the lowest rate in the group. A faulty board can disrupt the automatic defrost cycle, producing the same effect as a defrost system failure: frost that builds up, melts, and overflows.
- Sealed system (compressor): minority of cases (5.7%) where the leak accompanied a deeper sealed-system failure, repaired during the same visit rather than being the direct cause. The one-visit resolution rate was 81.0% for these service calls. Depending on the appliance’s age, a sealed-system repair may also be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty rather than as a standard repair.
The blocked drain tube alone accounts for more than half of all cases, and it’s also the simplest one to fix.
When to call a technician
Clearing the drain hole is generally within reach of a careful user. Everything else calls for more caution: any work on the compressor involves the sealed refrigerant system, a regulated procedure that must be performed by a certified technician. The drain tube seems clear, but water keeps building up: why?
The drip pan, located under or behind the appliance, may be misaligned, cracked, or already full. A damaged door seal can also cause frost to build back up quickly after clearing the drain, making it seem like the problem never went away.
Is it dangerous to let water accumulate under or inside the fridge?
It’s not an immediate risk, but prolonged pooling can damage flooring, encourage mould growth, and pose an electrical hazard if water reaches a nearby outlet or extension cord. It’s best to mop it up and address the cause promptly rather than wait.
Can a leak also affect the fridge’s ability to keep food cold?
